Fresh insight on Filipino seafarers

Seafarers chaplain on learning mission to Manila

CHAPLAIN of the Richards Bay Mission to Seafarers, Mark Classen, has returned from an inspiring visit to Manila.

He was one of 62 delegates from 20 different countries who attended the AHOY Training and Immersion Course, organised by the International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA).

‘Participants, who included ministers, ship visitors and port based welfare providers, were able to gain first-hand knowledge of Filipinos’ social and cultural background.

‘This is important as Filipino seafarers are in the vast majority aboard ships that visit our ports,’ said Classen.

‘We met and shared input with a number of institutions in the Filipino maritime sector.

‘Learning more about the world of Filipino seafarers – their language, history and culture – means that we are far better equipped to serve them.

The group also had the opportunity to mingle with locals at churches and shopping malls and to experience the daily life of Manila residents.
