Beach safety boosted

Lifeguards will shift bathers to one vicinity where they can all be monitored

WHILE the Bay Hall beach is not an official bathing area, lifeguards will be deployed in that vicinity to help prevent holiday drownings.

This was highlighted during the beach contingency planning meeting held at Alkantstrand on Friday where local authorities met to discuss safety, security and traffic plans for the festive season.

Chairing the meeting, City of uMhlathuze representative Shakes Hiraman said there have been several drowning incidents at Bay Hall and lifeguards will be deployed to that area from 8 December, operating from 10am to 5pm.

Warning signs have been erected in the vicinity but bathers do not adhere to these and parents are warned to keep a close eye on their children at all times.

‘Lifeguards will encourage people to move away from this area and rather swim at Alkantstrand beach.

‘The lifeguards are being sent to that area to monitor and prevent fatalities.

‘At Bay Hall, lifeguards will shift bathers to one vicinity where they can all be monitored.

‘In recent weeks, there have been three near drowning incidents at Bay Hall where the young children needed CPR,’ said Hiramen

Richards Bay SAPS , City Traffic Department, contracted security companies and tourism departments have their security and safety systems in place and additional members will be deployed at the beach.
