Lightning conductors rolled out

These lightning conductors offer protection to surrounding houses within a 100m radius

THE string of lightning strike incidents in Zululand, claiming lives and livestock, have prompted the KZN government to take a stand in ensuring improved public safety.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nomusa Dube-Ncube, launched the roll out of lightning rods in the Bingoma area in Ndlangubo Reserve on Saturday.

These lightning conductors offer protection to surrounding houses within a 100m radius and will be installed in public spaces such as community halls, clinics, schools and homes in high risk areas.

‘December and January have proved to be the most deadly time of year when it comes to lightning strikes.

‘Last year we witnessed the death of more than 20 people as a result of lightning, and so far this year we have lost close to 25 people,’ said Dube-Ncube.

Communities and municipalities have also been urged to install conductors.
