No major change in dam levels

The main source, the Goedertrouw Dam was 19.8% as of Monday

WHILE good rains have started falling over most of Zululand, residents of uMhlathuze have been asked to continue adhering to water usage restrictions and use portable water sparingly, regardless of the rain.

The city is still subject to Level 4 restrictions.

The rains received in the last two weeks have made a minimal significance to all the dams, lakes and other water sources from which the city abstracts its water.

The main source, the Goedertrouw Dam was 19.8% as of Monday.

Lake Mzingazi has risen to 58.4% and Lake Cubhu remains 100%.

Lake Cubhu is relatively small with a large catchment area.

All major reservoirs are more than 80% full.

Harvest rain water
City Mayor Mdu Mhlongo says, ‘We urge everyone to harvest rain water and make use of purified water for cooking and drinking.

‘We thank God for the little rain we are getting and begging for more.

‘Our people should learn about and get used to using water tanks to store rain water because we are not out of drought yet.’

The Mayor also urged all citizens with houses along rivers, streams and lakes to stay alert as flash storms and heavy rains may cause flooding and life threatening incidents.

The City continues to urge citizens to save water, fix all leaks in and outside their homes and report any other general leaks to the authorities.

Other dams
The Pongolapoort Dam is still critically low at 38.2%, 0.2% up on the previous Monday’s figures.

Klipfontein Dam, which feeds Ulundi and Vryheid areas, is a frightening 9.4%, having dropped from 11.6% in the last week.
