WATCH: Rain delays highway construction

Highway intersection delays

WORK on the R45-million upgrade of Medway Road, linking the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and the eastern gate of the port to the John Ross Parkway, has suffered delays due to inclement weather.

Motorists will have to be patient with the construction work and the temporary speed humps until at least the end of the first quarter next year, according to project engineer Rob Cowan.

He outlined the following progress report:

The major services (electricity, water and optic fibre cables) have all been relocated;

Layer works on John Ross/Medway Road is slightly behind programme and major works are expected to be complete by end of March 2017;

Layer works on Medway Road South Bound carriageway (new carriage to port) is delayed due the inclement weather over the past months. Major works expected to be complete by end of March 2017;

Construction of the new culvert over the Ngodweni canal is behind schedule due to challenges with de-watering of the coffer dam. This appears to have been resolved and construction is now going according to plan. Works expected to be completed by the end of March 2017;

In April 2017 traffic will be switched over on Medway Road to the new carriageway and construction on the old north bound carriageway will commence with expected completion by the end of August 2017, weather permitting.
