Animal angels rescue stab victim

He was stabilised and transported to Ngwelezana Hospital by IPPS

TWO SPCA inspectors who earlier this year delivered a baby next to the roadside while underway to an animal rescue, again arrived as if Heaven sent when a heavily wounded stab victim frantically flagged them down on Tuesday afternoon.

Richards Bay inspectors Shelly Prinsloo and Wynand Strauss were driving along the John Ross Parkway, returning to the SPCA after fetching a dog, when the elderly man, covered in blood, jumped into the road with his arms raised near the Greenhills turn-off.

‘He asked Wynand to take him to hospital, but as he touched the door, he collapsed,’ said Prinsloo.

‘He had two deep stab wounds in his lower body. One just missed a main artery.

‘He tried to stop the bleeding using his torn shirt like a tourniquet, but the way it was tied actually caused the blood to spurt out.

‘He almost lost consciousness and at times became incoherent.’

Prinsloo immediately started working to stop the blood loss and replace the tourniquet, while Strauss called the Meerensee CPF for assistance.

Paramedic Richard Schouten of IPSS and David Pretorius of Northern Region Protection Services, just returning from a sea rescue mission, and Melinda Ashington of Meerensee CPF rushed to the scene.

The victim told his rescuers he was attacked by a mugger near the Forelley Alley dirt road.

He was stabilised and transported to Ngwelezana Hospital by IPPS.

‘These guys were fantastic and Melinda even directed the traffic,’ said Prinsloo.
