Swiss yacht casualty safely ashore after high seas drama

Yachtie breaks arm in fierce weekend storm

HAVING barely recovered from an energy-sapping 20-hour rescue on Sunday, NSRI volunteers were back on the water again on Tuesday to assist a yachtswoman who had suffered a fractured arm at sea.

Swiss nationals Marie-Therese Jung (67) and her husband Paul had left Reunion 12 days earlier en route to South Africa on their yacht Mabuhay when they encountered severe storms off the Zululand coast.

During their battle in violent eight-metre swells, Marie-Therese sustained the injury.

Her plight was reported on Sunday while the boat was about 120 nautical miles from land and Sea Rescue rendezvoused with them some five nautical miles off Richards Bay shortly after noon on Tuesday, placing two NSRI rescuers and a paramedic on board.
