Accused drug dealer held in custody

A search of his car reportedly revealed the drugs and a roll of cash

THE trial of a Nigerian man allegedly found in possession of R49 000 worth of the drug ‘cat’ near Birdswood Secondary School, has been remanded to Friday in the Richards Bay District Court for his attorney to place himself on record.

Chukwama Omugo (41) is charged with possession of dangerous and dependence producing substances, namely methacathinone, also known by its street name ‘cat’.

He was arrested by the Hawks and the Empangeni Dog Unit in the driveway of his house in Bulbul Bend in October, following a tip-off to police.

A search of his car reportedly revealed the drugs and a roll of cash.

His house was also searched, but no drugs were found inside.

Omugo told the court a well known Durban defence attorney will appear on his behalf on Friday to arrange a date for his bail application.

The State is opposing bail and is expected to call investigating officer W/O Ryno Louw to testify about the strength of the State’s case against Omugo and whether he is regarded as a flight risk.

He is believed to be on bail in connection with another drug-related charge, for which he was arrested in July.

Omugo is reportedly married to a local woman, but they do not live together.

Though she confirmed to police that they are married, she said she lives in Mzingazi.

‘Cat’ is a poisonous concoction of substances such as ephedrine, acetone, paint solvents and sulfuric acid and is sold for R250 to R300 per gram on the streets.
