Two children die in lightning strike

Soaking rains over most of the weekend in the region's drought-stricken areas were welcomed

TWO Nongoma children died after being struck by lightning as a heavy thunderstorm swept through the area on Saturday afternoon.

Their father was severely burnt.

Early reports indicated that strong winds blew the roofs off houses, but no further details were available at the time of going to print.

Soaking rains over most of the weekend in the region’s drought-stricken areas were welcomed.

In the north, Pongola received just over 18mm, bringing the total for the month to 143mm.

More rains have fallen over the parched uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, with the nearby Mkuze Estate recording 16.8mm since Friday, bringing the monthly total to 124mm.

St Lucia and Dukuduku measured 46.5mm and 8.5mm respectively.

Good soaking rains measuring 15.9mm fell in the Heatonville area.

Rainfall figures received from other sections of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park at 8am on Saturday were Kosi Bay (82mm), Manzengwenya (80mm), Lake Sibiya (90mm), False Bay (8mm), Charters Creek (13mm) and Mission Rocks (19mm).

eShowe and Mtunzini have measured just on 100mm this month and Gingindlovu 41.8mm.
