Fight against albino killings intensifies

'These accusations are ungodly and disrespectful to our calling and practices'

THE fight against albino killings has intensified.

A KZN traditional healer is on a mission to teach communities and other herbalists about albinism with the hope of combatting violence and discrimination against albinos.

With crimes against them still rife across the country, Dr Musa Zulu wants to spread a strong message about the issue at the the ‘Maz Jikeleza Tour’ at the Imbizo Hall in Empangeni next month.

The purpose of his campaign is to dismiss myths that albino body parts can be used for traditional medicine.

‘Traditional healers don’t harm, but rather save lives. We don’t want to be associated with such acts. We want to spread a strong message and fight these barbaric actions because they taint our image,’ said Zulu.

It is time people understand these actions will not be tolerated and we won’t stand by and watch while innocent people are being killed because of the way they look,’

‘It’s not our practice or our culture. People must not hide behind culture and religion to continue with their evil ways.

These are murders and has nothing to do with culture or religion,’ Zulu said.

Albinism is an inherited genetic condition in which the body does not produce enough melanin, the chemical that is responsible for eye, skin and hair colour.

Because of the lack of pigmentation, the affected person has very pale skin, hair and eyes.

During the campaign in Empangeni, Zulu hopes to be joined by other traditional healers, pastors, and community leaders who are against the practice.
