Rhino poacher killed on Eastern Shores

A rifle and an axe were found near his body

TWO game rangers shot and killed a poacher in the Mfabeni Mission Rocks area of the Eastern Shores section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park near St Lucia last Thursday.

It is reported that the rangers were patrolling inside the game reserve when they heard a gunshot.

They observed four rhinos running from the direction of a gunshot, followed by two armed poachers.

The poachers were ordered to surrender, but they instead opened fire on the rangers, who returned fire killing one of the poachers.

A rifle and an axe were found near his body.

The other suspect managed to escape.

The game rangers were not injured during the shoot-out.

The deceased has not yet been identified and his body was taken to the Mtubatuba mortuary.

The police have open an attempted murder, trespassing and illegal hunting docket.

There have been no further arrests.
