KZN Premier launches I Do Right Campaign

Do the right thing even when no-one is watching

Premier of the province Willies Mchunu has called on communities to work together with government in promoting the ideals of the I Do Rights Campaign.

‘It is disheartening when we go to communities, and we find that they always have the same complaints over a period of years.

‘This government cannot rest when there are people who die as a result of treatable illnesses, when there are people still without water and electricity, and when there are people still living on poverty.

‘Some communities even go to the extent of blaming their elected representatives of being useless, when in fact the holdup is with some departmental official,’ said Mchunu who was speaking at the launch of the campaign at Alfred Duma Municipality last week.

Mchunu said communities will also blame government or political leaders for corruption when in fact most acts of corruption are perpetuated by a few officials.

‘This is why today we want to talk to everyone’s conscience to say you must do the right thing even when no one is watching. We want to say if you have been entrusted with taxpayers’ money, it is important that you treat that money with respect,’ said Mchunu.

He said theft does not only mean taking money from the coffers, but also the simple dereliction of duty.
