Four dead in separate accidents over weekend

The road was closed for a short while as emergency services worked to treat the patients and clear the wreckage

A SPATE of road accidents over the weekend claimed the lives of at least four people.

On Friday night at around 10pm, 30-year-old Bonginkosi Dube died when his VW hatchback was involved in a collision with two trucks on the N2 near the KwaMsane off-ramp.

Dube, who was driving, was declared dead on scene while both his passengers were seriously injured.

‘They were both transported to Ngwelezana Hospital for treatment,’ said KwaMsane SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe.

Capt Mdletshe said the cause of the accident was under investigation.

On Sunday at around 4am a 33-year-old man, Zakhele Mdletshe died after being hit by a car also on the N2 near KwaMsane.

Witnesses told police he was walking by the side of the road when a car struck him, in a hit and run incident.

At around 6pm a 26-year-old woman, Nompumelelo Ndlanzi was hit by a truck near Ingwavuma.

The truck driver told police the victim had walked in front of the truck and he had not been able to brake in time.

‘In all three instances, cases of culpable homicide are being investigated,’ said Captain Mdletshe.

Meanwhile at the same time on Sunday, a taxi that had been hijacked in Ulundi smashed head-on into a bakkie on the R34 near Melmoth.

Four people were seriously injured and taken to KwaMagwaza Hospital and Ngwelezana Hospital respectively while one person died on scene.
