Arrests after Hluhluwe family burnt to death

A third victim later succumbed to burn wounds while another is in a critical condition in hospital

HLUHLUWE police worked tirelessly to arrest five suspects after an attack on a homestead in Madulini Reserve, Hluhluwe, where an elderly woman and her mentally disabled grandson were brutally killed.

Nyanyekile Gumede (61) and Sifiso Nkosi were assaulted and burnt to death while sleeping in their huts.

SAPS members worked throughout the night from Saturday until Sunday morning searching for the perpetrators.

Their hard work paid off when they arrested three suspects in Hluhluwe, with two others detained along the N2 en route to Durban.

Aged between 22 and 32, they were initially charged with two counts of murder and three of attempted murder and arson.

A third victim later succumbed to burn wounds while another is in a critical condition in hospital.

However there was a twist in the tale when three of the five suspects were later released at the Hluhluwe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after not being positively linked to the attack .

It is reported the suspects attacked the Mdletshe homestead and set three huts alight on Saturday, with revenge as the possible motive.

All the accused were neighbours of the victims.
