Grantham Park Primary becomes water wise

Water tank system cuts water consumption by 53%

GRANTHAM Park Primary School is on a mission to go green.

The school has saved 53% of its water consumption from April to September this year alone.

The key to their success is 12 Jojo water tanks installed on the school premises to enable staff to fight the battle against water wastage.

The entire operation is held together by a pressure pump system with an output of eight bar pressure.

To put this in perspective, a normal household has an output of four bar pressure.

The system is designed to maximize the amount of rainwater collected in the tanks by using the water for everyday use such as the watering of plants and general basin and toilet use.

Principal George van Wyk said it was a decision taken by the school given the current drought situation.

‘It started with a campaign where for two weeks we would switch off the water at the school for two hours per day, one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon.

‘This was to make pupils more aware of what it means to save water and use it more diligently.’

Since the implementation of the water tanks, the school has seen drastic savings in water costs.

Only the junior block is currently running off this system, however plans to get the senior block linked are currently underway.

Van Wyk said it has been through the efforts of the staff as well as the pupils who raised funds and created posters to create awareness, that this project has come into being.

‘It is definitely something that all schools should do in an attempt to save water and cut costs.’
