Three corrupt policemen sent to jail

The court sent out a clear message that police corruption will not be tolerated

THREE police officers who arrested a couple for public indecency and then attempted to extort a bribe from them to drop the charges, were sentenced to imprisonment in the Empangeni Regional Court on Thursday.

Cst Siphosethu Myesa (33), Cst Lukhululeko Mndunge and W/O Justice Gumede (44), were apprehended by the Hawks in a ‘buy bust’ in 2013.

Myesa and Mdunge were each sentenced to five years imprisonment, while Gumede received four years imprisonment, whereafter they were escorted directly to the holding cells.

The court sent out a clear message that police corruption will not be tolerated.

The presiding magistrate said the sentences serve as a warning for other corrupt policemen.

She said a sentence of direct imprisonment was in the interest of justice.

The three apprehended the couple in a car near Empangeni’s Central Park.

They initially demanded R3 500 in return for their release and later dropped the sum to R2 000.
