Murder fuelled by family feud

Police found at least 13 empty casings in the vicinity

NONGOMA SAPS are investigating a case of murder following a shooting near Nongoma in the early hours of Saturday morning that left one man dead.

Ulundi SAPS spokeswoman Captain Nkosie Gwala on Saturday said the incident occurred in the Dhabazi area.

‘The 31-year-old victim arrived at the homestead at around 2am from Johannesburg,’ said Captain Gwala.

‘He was visiting family to attend a traditional function.’

Gwala said the man went to sleep in a dwelling at the homestead, where two young boys were also sleeping.

‘Two men, who had at least one firearm, kicked down the door and entered the dwelling wearing balaclavas,’ she said.

‘The victim was involved in a scuffle with the suspects and managed to push them outside.

‘The boys reported hearing gunshots go off, but were too scared to leave the building until daylight.’

The victim’s body was found a few meters away from the front door riddled with bullets.

Police found at least 13 empty casings in the vicinity.

‘The motive of the killing is as yet unknown and no suspects have as yet been identified,’ said Captain Gwala.

‘It is suspected the murder is linked to an ongoing feud between the Nkosi and Mahlinza families,’ she concluded.
