From America, with love

The three worked with Hospice staff for a week, travelled around town and into rural areas visiting patients

SAVING up their own money for a year to pay for the trip, three American women flew to South Africa recently with bags filled with medical supplies, clothes, toys, blankets, toiletries and more in aid of Zululand Hospice.

Renee Ostromecki and Barri Iskin, both social workers at Lifetime Care Hospice in the USA, and Ruth Hogan, who has made the trip for the eleventh time, arrived in Empangeni to volunteer at Zululand Hospice and help local communities.

The three worked with Hospice staff for a week, travelled around town and into rural areas visiting patients.

‘It is sometimes very hard for people to come face-to-face with poverty and disease and to smile at a fellow human being who is suffering and in pain, and then just go back to a normal life,’ said Hospice spokesperson Tatum Bristow.

‘These ladies’ hearts have been touched and they will be changed for the rest of their lives.’

At a farewell lunch, Hospice staff sang ‘Siyabonga Baba’, which brought the visitors to tears.

Hogan said that she can’t help but come back to Zululand year after year because ‘the people here have become family, and you can’t stay away from family.’
