Opening doors of opportunity

'Destitute people cannot think further than basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter'

WHILE many opportunists prefer to shun employment opportunities and hide behind poverty and street begging, those willing to grab opportunities and put shoulder to the wheel are an inspiration to their mentors, who continue appealing for a shelter for the homeless.

Derrick Schwartz of Open Doors Ministries, a feeding scheme and Bible study group of the Outlook Church in Birdswood, says although they have their eyes set on a formal shelter for the city, part-time employment opportunities contribute extensively to motivate people.

‘We have managed to recently secure temporary positions at a corporate company through a formal selection process, and even if it is on a contractual basis, we see this as an exciting development for them. Employment creates hope and confidence.

‘There are those who disappoint by turning back to their addictions and the streets despite employment offers, support and encouragement, but we move on quickly.

Schwartz joined Outlook’s soup kitchen ministry two years ago and together with other faith-based organisations take turns to provide daily meals at the uMhlathuze Municipality.

‘Destitute people cannot think further than basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter – that is why we have to provide those needs first before we can think of further empowerment such as skills and employment.

‘Many of our people are semi-skilled, but they don’t have CVs, phones, transport or a place to clean up for an interview.

‘We have received a donation of 70 soaps and face cloths for which we are so thankful. We still need towels, deodorants – any donations are welcome.

‘We are searching for a vacant warehouse, premises or piece of land to establish a shelter with definite rules, providing beds, meals and skills opportunities within a structured environment.’

‘They must ultimately have three months to clean up, learn a skill, receive ministry and counselling and be integrated into society.
