Mchunu still looking for answers

Former Premier of KZN, Senzo Mchunu, has broken his silence on issues behind his removal from office

FORMER KZN premier Senzo Mchunu says he still does not know why he was removed from office in May this year, after losing the provincial ANC leadership to Sihle Zikalala.

Mchunu was given a date by which he had to resign, which he says he only complied with grudgingly.

And now for the first time he has broken his silence, giving interviews to both ENCA and the Sunday Times, saying he is still to be told the real reason behind his redeployment.

This after he refused to accept redeployment as a member of parliament, saying he would only take up the position once his name has been cleared of the ‘false allegations’ against him.

Mchunu said he became aware ‘that something was wrong’ in the run-up to the elective conference last year.

‘We held a conference last year. There were a number of issues [put] before the conference and even at the conference itself,’ he was quoted as saying.

‘We went through that and results were given. It’s not for me to say [if] the conference [was] rigged or not.’

But now it has emerged that the results of the conference are being challenged in the High Court.

Close to 50% (266) of the ANC branches have asked the court to set the results of the conference election aside.
The matter is due to be heard on 11 October.

‘Of course I’ve got an interest in that case because it’s an interesting matter as to what actually happened,’ Mchunu told ENCA.

‘Maybe the court in its own wisdom will be able to settle that matter once and for all.’
