Getting dirty to fight pollution

Leaders roll their sleeves during a clean-up campaign in eSikhaleni

A MASSIVE clean-up and environmental awareness campaign to encourage cleanliness within the area was launched in eSikhaleni on Thursday.

This project, headed by King Cetshwayo District Municipality speaker, Cllr Khulani Hadebe, targeted a number of hot spots known for filth and decay in the uMkhobose Reserve.

The aim was to provide community members with information on how to care for their environment, and the potential negative impacts of waste.

‘This has necessitated the need for environmental education and a clean-up campaign to educate people with the hope of improving the environmental conditions of our communities and to curb illegal dumping activities,’ said Hadebe.

‘Mkhobosa has been identified as the area that needs immediate attention owing to the illegal dumping.’

Environmental awareness educator Vusimuzi Zungu also educated the community about waste and the importance of recycling, which can possibly generate an income.

‘Pollution not only leads to environmental hazards, but it also has major health impacts to surrounding communities.

‘For example diseases such as cholera, tuberculosis and asthma may be caused by the mismanagement of waste. Of concern is that even in areas with a waste skip there is still illegal dumping activity taking place,’ said Zungu.

After the presentations leaders, including the district’s municipal manager Mandla Nkosi and uMhlathuze speaker Mfundo Mthenjana rolled up their sleeves to participate in the clean-up initiative.
