Rain brings some relief but dam levels still low

The highest rainfall measured over the weekend was in St Lucia, where 68mm were reported

THE level of the Goedertrouw Dam dropped 0.1% to 17.4% despite the good rains received throughout most of Zululand over the weekend.

Pongolapoort Dam has continued to drop and is now at 38.4% compared to 38.7% last Monday.

The levels may increase slightly during the week as the rains from higher up in the catchment areas starts flowing into the dams.

The highest rainfall measured over the weekend was in St Lucia, where 68mm were reported.

This, with other figures of 18mm at False Bay, 40mm on the Western Shores and 59mm at Mission Rocks, will have brought welcome relief to the St Lucia Lake system.

Mantuma camp in the uMkhuze section of iSimangaliso Wetland Park received 8mm.

eShowe and Melmoth on the south and north sides of the Goedertrouw Dam recorded 39.6mm and 45mm respectively.

On Saturday alone, 20.3mm was measured in eShowe, while 27.6 fell in Melmoth on Sunday.

Along the coast, KwaMbonambi measured 36.6 mm and Port Durnford 41.2mm over the weekend.

Inland from eShowe, Entumeni measured 38.7mm.

Residents are requested to use water sparingly as the rain has not yet filled up the main reservoirs in the region and the situation remains dire.
