UPDATE: N2 fatal crash – city driver under investigation

Municipality investigates allegations City employee involved in fatal crash was ‘under the influence’

AN internal investigation will reveal whether a City of uMhlathuze employee was negligently driving under the influence of alcohol when he was involved in crash that left two people dead.

City spokesperson Mdu Ncalane confirmed that the municipality had launched an internal probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash that claimed the lives of Mtubatuba residents Sinthemba Mahlangu (17) and Halisani Gumede (22).

A city double-cab bakkie slammed into the back of a Toyota Tazz which was being pushed towards the petrol station after experiencing mechanical difficulty.

The accident occurred on the Mhlathuze River Bridge at around 3am last Saturday.

If the investigation finds the employee, who is still in hospital recovering from his injuries, was negligent, disciplinary measures would be taken against him.
