Taking a stand against drug abuse

Teachers and pupils from Qhakaza High School took to the streets, calling for a drug free society

AS many cases of drug abuse at schools go unchecked, teachers bear the brunt of being in charge of aggressive and sometimes dangerous pupils.

Qhakaza High School principal Khehla Mbatha told the Zululand Observer at last week’s healthy lifestyle walk organised by Star for Life (SFL) that drug abuse is at its peak in his school.

‘We are still fresh from an incident where a pupil stabbed another. There is nothing as disturbing as a young person doing drugs. Drug abuse is like a death sentence – once you are in, it is difficult to get out. The danger about the drug abuse is that it is destroying our children’s future,’ Mbatha said.

The walk, which began at the R102 traffic circle and proceeded to Qhakaza High School, was aimed at inspiring young people to value learning, acquire the knowledge and skills they need for productive work and live healthy meaningful lives.

Hundreds of pupils and teachers, joined by community members, took to the streets waving placards advocating a drug free society.

Mbatha said he remained hopeful that the drug problem affecting schools around Dlangezwa will eventually be overcome.
