No-show by firefighters fuels flames

Big blaze guts five shops in Hluhluwe

SWIFT community intervention saved the day in Hluhluwe on Friday after local disaster management services failed to respond to a blaze that rapidly spread to five businesses.

Teams of farmers, community members and businessmen instead took it upon themselves to deal with the emergency using their own equipment and without the necessary safety gear.

This after the Hluhluwe Disaster Management Services was reportedly unable to assist owing to the lack of working equipment, manpower and water to put out the fire.

The inferno was eventually extinguished after transferring 48 000 litres of water earmarked for drought relief from municipal water tankers under the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry to community firefighting vehicles.
