A RICHARDS Bay man facing multiple charges of fraud, was granted R10 000 bail on Tuesday in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court.
David Veersamy Naidoo (47) has been charged with several counts of fraud after he allegedly defrauded church congregation members who paid for a trip to Israel.
The accused, a treasurer at the Living Stones Baptist Church at the time, organised the proposed trip at a cost of R16 000 per person, but failed to refund the members when the trip did not materialise.
Congregants deposited monthly payments into the church account as well as into an account of one of his relatives.
He allegedly received R461 000, wrote cheques from the church account, had them signed and then cashed them in.
There are outstanding statements from Gauteng and more charges are likely to be added as the case continues.
When members discovered that the trip’s flights and accommodation had not been booked, they demanded refunds, but only R161 000 was returned.
