Speeding car claims man’s life

Reports suggest the duo was coming from a local tavern when the accident happened

AN afternoon walk quickly turned into a horrific scene in Mtunzini on Sunday afternoon, when a Mozambican man was knocked over and killed by a speeding car.

While walking hand-inhand with his best friend on the R102 at around 5pm, the life of Bheki Shabalala (27) was snuffed out like a candle.

Reports suggest the duo was coming from a local tavern when the accident happened.

According to Mtunzini police spokesperson, captain Sbusiso Guma, the accident occurred in the eZinkambeni area between oBanjeni and eMoyeni when the driver of a vehicle was trying to overtake.

It is said Shabalala tried to avoid the oncoming car, but stepped in front of it instead.

He sustained severe injuries and died at the scene.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at Mtunzini police station.

‘We plead with people to be careful on the road, and pedestrians not to come close to the road when under the influence.

Road rules must be respected at all times to avoid these unfortunate incidents,’ said Guma.
