Bay murder case transferred to High Court

THE four men charged with the murder of Richards Bay meter taxi owner, Sbongiseni Mbonwa, were denied bail in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court this week.

After a two-week bail application in District Court 2, Investigating Officer S Shoba, family and friends of the deceased, as well as more than 40 meter taxi owners and drivers breathed a sigh of relief when the accused were remanded in custody.

The matter has been transferred to the High Court and Siyabonga Nxumalo (21), Ndodo Mnguni (28),Thabani Bukhosini (24) and Fanizani Mdletshe (25) will appear on 30 September.

The court heard how the deceased was reported as a missing person on 16 July and his body found two weeks later in the bushes along a road in the Hluhluwe area. He was identified by his clothing.

It is believed there is still one accused at large who was the alleged mastermind behind the incident.

The accused, who are from Hluhluwe, hired Mbonwa’s taxi and was later hijacked, robbed and murdered.

The vehicle was abandoned in Meerensee and recovered by police.
