Barefoot expedition to raise funds

Their journey started on Monday in front of the Pietermaritzburg City Hall

JOHN Ross is a well-known name in Zululand with John Ross College, John Ross Parkway between Richards Bay and Empangeni, the John Ross highways in eShowe and Mtubatuba being some of the landmarks honouring the historical figure.

John Ross‘ (real name Charles Rawden Maclean) fame really came from his epic trip at the age of 15 from Port Natal to Delagoa Bay and back to procure medicine and supplies in 1827.

Two adventurers are now undertaking a similar trip, but they are walking from Pietermaritznurg to Maputo and back over 1 800km and hope to set a new Guiness World Record for barefoot walking and running.

While Simphiwe ‘Fiddy’ Ngcobo will be doing the journey wearing shoes, Thommo Hart plans to do it barefoot.

Hart is the founder of ‘Expeditionists’ and a passionate anthropologist, adventurer, photographer and lover of Africa, while his friend Ngcobo is a filmmaker.

Raising funds
Hart will raise money for the breast cancer and the education organisation Pink Drive, while Ngcobo will do so for the Empilweni Physically Challenged Community Centre, which cares for mentally and physically challenged children in kwaNdengezi township near Durban.

Their journey started on Monday in front of the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and they arrived in eShowe on Friday via Greytown and Kranskop.

Anyone wishing to support either of the causes can do so using the Capitec Bank Account number 1481193110, Scottsville Branch Code 470010, Account holder Mr TBHart and reference your deposit either ‘expedition’ or ‘Empilweni’.

For Pink Drive donations, use the SMS number 40158 with the reference JRC. Each SMS cost R20.

The route
From eShowe they will travel through Melmoth and Nongoma to Pongola before entering Swaziland. They will then venture back into South Africa and finally Mozambique to Maputo.

After a very short break they will return along the coast.

Their travels can be followed HERE or visit the website HERE.
