Mkhulisi takes mayoral hot seat

'We will continue intensifying the struggle against fraud and corruption'

NEWLY elected mayor for the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, Cllr Ntombenhle Nomfundo Penelope Mkhulisi, has committed herself to lead the district municipality as a collective, saying there will be no purge of municipal officials.

Speaking after her inauguration as the second female mayor of the renamed King Cetshwayo District Municipality held last week at the Empangeni Town Hall, Mkhulisi appealed to fellow councillors to join her in taking the district municipality to greater heights.

‘Together we need to take services to the people who have not experienced proper development in their areas. Even though I may be new in this seat, I want to declare that the mandate has not changed. Together we will advance people’s power in all our communities.

‘As the third largest municipality in KZN which has won numerous awards, our accolades over the past five years speaks volume of our commitment to putting people first. We will continue intensifying the struggle against fraud and corruption and promote a social cohesive society,’ Mkhulisi said.

‘We are mindful of challenges that lie ahead, but we have an opportunity to exploit economic entities such as tourism to create avenues that will provide our people with skills.

‘We have an opportunity to tap into the ocean economy.

‘I also want to declare that the recent abduction of people with albinism has no place in our district. We are making a call to provincial government to work with us. We have a duty to engage and remain accountable to our people.’

Mkhulisi paid tribute to the previous leadership of the erstwhile uThungulu District Municipality.
