Massive trolley haul boosts crime fight

'We have seen a major difference since we implemented this project two months ago to keep the streets clean of these 'trolley pushers'

IN AN effort to keep their streets safe and crime free, the Community Protection Initiative (CPI) Richards Bay undertook a major trolley clean-up operation on Friday night recovering about 150 retail store trolleys in the Alton area.

According to CPI representative Donald Pittendrigh, their clean-up campaign of trolleys around Richard Bay suburbs has yielded positive results and helped to curb and deter criminal activities.

The three-hour massive trolley recovery operation was conducted by eight CPI members in three private vehicles and trailers and delivered to the stores on Saturday morning.

‘Most of these trolleys are new or in good condition but are being used illegally by people pushing them around the city collecting items.

‘For those that are broken or damaged, they are dumped in the local greenbelts or left around as litter.

‘We have seen a major difference since we implemented this project two months ago to keep the streets clean of these ‘trolley pushers’.

‘We know that some retailers have appointed contractors to do their trolley collections and are even working with some of them. But, we want to create a good working relationship with these local businesses to help keep these trolleys off the streets.’
