‘No more games’ vows new Mtuba mayor

‘The roads, water – all the basic services. These things are not a question of if, they are a matter of must. And I will ensure they are resolved.’

THERE is a new sheriff in Mtubatuba town – and he means business.

Tough talking Mtubatuba born-and-bred Qhina Mkhwanazi is hitting the ground running after he was elected mayor last week.

According to him the time for talking is over and only the implementation of practical and firm action plans will steer the troubled town into greener pastures of prosperity.

A member of the IFP, ‘MQ’ as he is affectionately known, came into power thanks to coalition agreements with the DA and the EFF, and he now has the difficult task of uniting a council recently rendered ineffective by deep-rooted rivalries, scandals and political tomfoolery.

Both the ANC and the IFP won 18 seats during the local government elections.

In recent years Mtubatuba Municipality has been considered a non-functioning entity. It was placed under administration twice and even dissolved last year.

It has been a municipality that failed its people again and again.

But the determined 56-year-old Mkhwanazi, a veteran investigator of the South African Police, private investigator and ward councillor for 10 years, says he is ready for the challenge despite inheriting a severely troubled and discredited administration.

‘I am not excited or happy that I have been elected mayor,’ he said on Tuesday, settling his near six-foot frame into an office chair.

‘There is a lot of work to be done.’
