Mzimela calls for removal of election posters

'I feel it is unfair on the part of the municipality to have to plead and remind us to do what we already know'

NEWLY elected Councillor for Ward 27 in the City of uMhlathuze, Simphiwe Mzimela has challenged all political parties who contested the recent Local Government Elections to follow in his footsteps by removing election posters from the street poles.

Mzimela, who was caught this week by the Zululand Observer while removing his election posters said, this was the best thing to do, as the posters have served their purpose.

‘In the spirit of keeping our city clean and in understanding that the elections have come and gone, it is proper that we do the right thing as political parties.

‘I feel it is unfair on the part of the municipality to have to plead and remind us to do what we already know.’

Mzimela said his move had nothing to do with his excitement at winning Ward 27.

‘Even if I had lost in these elections, I would still have removed all my election posters on our street poles.

‘As a city we are known for our tidiness, and we need to keep that record. People must bear in mind that the next elections will be held in the year 2019, so there is no need for any election material to be seen on our beautiful streets. As of now we are busy constituting municipal councils, which means the real work of improving people’s lives begins.

‘As public representatives we are coming to municipal councils to implement what we promised on our election manifestos. The biggest mandate we have is to serve all residents residing within the City of uMhlathuze irrespective of their political affiliations.

A soft spoken Mzimela, who is a first time councillor will be responsible for Ward 27, which incorporates areas such as Ngwelezane A, part of B-Section, part of uMhlanga, Isigisi and Manqomfini Reserves.

Meanwhile City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager Mduduzi Vincent Ncalane has commended Mzimela for doing what was necessary.

‘As a city we wish to add our weight by urging all political parties and independent candidates to remove all their election material on our street poles. The seven day cut off date elapsed a week ago and the City will have no choice but to remove the posters and recover funds from all those guilty candidates.

‘We commend all those like Mzimela who have adhered to this council rule,’ added Ncalane.
