Unizulu staff on strike

The letter lists the outstanding demands the union says must be addressed

UNIVERSITY of Zululand (Unizulu) support staff went on strike from Monday morning as negotiations regarding salaries and benefits between the university and unions drag on.

A letter sent to the university’s Manager of Employee Relations by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), last week gave notice of the strike.

Widely circulated among Unizulu staff, the letter cites the following reasons for the strike:

• The non-resolution of outstanding demands tabled by NEHAWU during salary negotiations;

• The decision by university management to delay salary negotiations until 17 August despite increases having had to be effected on 15 July.

The letter lists the outstanding demands the union says must be addressed, which include corrections to salary scales and grades which must be exclusive of benefits; the restoration of benefits taken away; improved working conditions; all vacant positions, including senior management positions, be filled; leave encashment be allowed; no lecturer be allowed to mark more than 50 test/examination answer books; and study leave granted to non-academic staff.
