Real health talk for girls

Somopho Primary School pupils encouraged to abstain from sexual activities

A SANITARY towel handover function turned into a fascinating empowerment seminar for girls and their parents at Somopho Primary School outside Empangeni last week.

Health professionals from Lower uMfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital addressed hundreds of young girls about different common health issues and equipped them with necessary information.

Dr Londiwe Gumbi encouraged pupils to abstain from sexual activities to prevent teen pregnancy and avoid diseases such as HIV/Aids.

‘But if it happens that you become pregnant, you must not hide it, but report it. Health professionals will be able to ensure a healthy pregnancy which will be monitored,’ she said.

Talks also included health tips for parents such as the importance of screening, undertaking regular hospital check-ups and even self-examinations.

The team also handed over sanitary towels to girls and offered information on hygiene.
