Educating women on healthy lifestyles

The campaign will be rolled out to all areas within the city of uMhlathuze

UMHLATHUZE Deputy Mayor Zethu Gumbi has commended the city’s First Lady Thandeka Mhlongo for empowering women at the launch of the Phila Mama campaign at the Vulindlela Community Hall last week.

‘It is initiatives such as these that need to be supported, especially as we commemorate Women’s Month. This brainchild by Mhlongo will yield positive results,’ said Gumbi.

‘My goal is to keep our mothers and grandmothers healthy through aerobics, different exercises and games that they will play and compete against each other,’ said Mhlongo.

‘Through this campaign we will also have women seminars, where our mothers and gogos will share life experiences with each other, discussing issues pertaining to how to build a nation through respect and fulfilling responsibilities as mothers to many people.

‘Older women still believe in traditional ways of curing themselves and forget that there are facilities on their doorsteps to check and advise them on health issues.’

‘I also intend working with the health department, health NGOs and local clinics to ensure all our mothers and gogos live healthy lifestyles.

‘The campaign will be rolled out to all areas within the city of uMhlathuze,’ Mhlongo said.

Senior citizens as old as 90 began the day doing aerobics outside the hall. Some sarrived as a soccer team from Ntuze Reserve to show their skills and fitness.

Besides playing games, many older women queued for health screening at the Department of Health’s mobile clinic.
