Community giant passes away

The memorial service will be held in the NG Kerk, Essenwood Way at 3pm tomorrow (Friday)

AFTER battling bravely in a long fight against brain lesions, former school headmaster and community leader Peter Terry-Lloyd passed away on Sunday night at the Richards Bay Medical Institute.

In a tremendous contribution to education and the shaping of young minds, Peter was founding Principal of both John Ross College (1985-1997) and Grantleigh High.

With a special love for children, he remained proud of alumni such as Riaan Manser and thrilled at his past pupils’ achievements in business, sport or other realms.

Besides his influence as an educator, Peter shared his zest for life, enquiring mind and generous humanity with a number of local organisations.

He served the Rotary Club of Richards Bay with distinction for 25 years, twice as President, and was honoured with a Paul Harris Fellowship award.

Peter was General Manager of Zululand Hospice for six years and Session Clark of the Richards Bay Presbyterian Church for about five years.

The son of a distinguished naval Rear Admiral, Peter kept a keen interest in all things military and with a deep love for historical facts also chaired the Zululand History Society.

His devotion extended to the animal kingdom and as a pet lover, Peter was an avid supporter of the Richards Bay SPCA, where he spent countless Saturdays working in the tea garden to raise funds.

An intense appreciation for nature was evident in the prolific number of emails he circulated showing the wonders of the created world.

His love for the beach, game reserves, outdoor life and the environment saw him form part of the Pelican Island Protection Society team involved in the conservation and cleaning of the island.

With his sharp wit and broad general knowledge, extending from sport to the sciences, Peter was a staunch supporter of the LifeLine Wine & Wisdom quiz evenings and an active member of the Bridge Club.

A man of strong opinions and social conscience, he was a regular letter writer to the Zululand Observer, whether praising excellent service of chastising slack performance.

Above all, Peter enjoyed a long and blessed life with his wife Myfanwy, their children Roland and Shayne, and six beloved grandchildren.

His close-knit family and friends stood by him during his illness and while their loss is great, their memories of his love and charity are boundless.

The Terry-Lloyd family has requested that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to the NSRI, Richards Bay.
