Supporter attacked with panga at voting station

Police have been called to move swiftly and arrest the perpetrator, whose identity is known to the local community.

The ANC in KZN has reacted with shock after one of its supporters was attacked with a panga outside a polling station on Wednesday.

This according to a statement released by the ANC on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred in Pongola has been roundly criticized by the leadership of the ANC.

Police have been called to move swiftly and arrest the perpetrator, whose identity is known to the local community.

The suspect reportedly walked up to the victim who was awaiting his turn in the queue to cast his vote and struck him on the upper body before fleeing the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition. The reason for the attack was not immediately apparent.

In condemning the attack, the ANC said it was an abomination and a blight on the country’s democracy that a citizen should be so brutally attacked while waiting to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

The party again called for calm and tolerance among all people during the election period and beyond.

A total of twelve ANC members and leaders have been killed in the province in the over the past two months.
