Mission to empower young women

'With this forum we intend grooming young women to become responsible mothers.'

SOUTH Africa cannot be truly liberated as long as women still live in abject poverty and are not economically active.

This was the opinion of uThungulu District Mayor Nonhle Mkhulisi at the launch of the Regional Women’s Desk at the uMfolozi Casino Resort last week.

Mkhulisi said it was disturbing to note that women, mostly from rural areas, were still going to bed on empty stomachs, adding that the fight against unemployment, poverty and inequality needed to be stepped up.

‘The reality is that women were at the forefront of the struggle, and they paid the highest price for the freedom the citizens of this country now enjoy. If we intend moving South Africa forward we must start by empowering women, young women in particular,’ she said.

KZN Women’s League Chairperson Celiwe Madlopha said the formation of the Young Women’s Desk was one of the resolutions taken at last year’s National Women’s Conference.

‘With this forum we intend grooming young women to become responsible mothers.

‘The main objective is to create a platform for young women to engage broadly on issues, among others, of economy, health and education.

The gathering was also addressed by the Musa Dladla Women’s League Regional Chairperson Alice Mthembu, who called for an end to child and women abuse.
