Teacher imprisoned for rape released following new evidence
Teacher released after new evidence emerges in rape case
AN Empangeni teacher who has spent three years behind bars for rape has been released after new evidence came to light.
The 45-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victim who is a family member, was earlier this month released from Qalakabusha Prison where he has been serving a life sentence after a Pietermaritzburg High Court appeal judge set aside his 2013 conviction.
The teacher’s case will now go back to trial to enable the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court to hear the new evidence.
He was convicted in 2013 for the rape of his 12-year-old relative in 2010.
His release was granted after the complainant, now 18, recanted her previous version of events, saying she had been mistaken and that another man, not the teacher, had raped her.
The teacher is meanwhile struggling to rebuild his life after his home was severely damaged during his time in prison and he no longer has a job.
The case is set to be heard again next month, during which time more details would emerge.
