Love down the line at Hang Out with Madiba day

Without fail the support given to this event has consistently exceeded expectations, with this year being no exception.

GOODWILL turned into action on Monday as Zululanders assembled in large numbers to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day at the Zululand Observer ‘Hang Out With Madiba’ line.

This year marked the fourth annual event and once again businesses and residents flocked to the washing lines set up at the ZO offices in Richards Bay and Empangeni.

The name of the game? Getting as many donations of old or unwanted clothing to be distributed to needy causes across the region.

Without fail the support given to this event has consistently exceeded expectations, with this year being no exception.

‘Zululanders have yet again reached out with compassion and love. Thank you!’ – ZO Managing Director and DICE founder, Regina Anthony

Donations began pouring in before 8am – baby clothes, toys, hand-knitted blankets and even brand new clothing.

When all was said and done, through the ZO’s charity arm Do I Care Enough? (DICE) around 20 boxes of clothing was donated to Empangeni and Richards Bay Family and Child Care and the uMhlathuze Disaster Management team filled two bakkies with clothes and blankets.

DICE has kept a few boxes to be handed out during one of its many campaigns to assist those in need.

‘We cannot express our thanks in words,’ said DICE coordinator, Judy Dearling.

‘It was heart-warming to see everyone coming together for a common and good cause.’

Gratitude

The Zululand Observer and DICE wish to extend their most heartfelt thanks to the following people:

• The St Catherine’s Interact team who stayed on the line to help from 8am to 2pm. You girls are the best!

• Empangeni and Richards Bay Rotary clubs for their ongoing support.

• The City of uMhlathuze Tourism and Disaster Management teams.

• Zultrans for their assistance in transporting all the clothing.

• Empangeni and Richards Bay Family and Child Care.

• The Umfolozi Casino Resort for their donation of food parcels and blankets.

• Special thanks to the Golden Oldies who donated hand-knitted jerseys, beanies and blankets.

• Last but not least, thank you to each and every person who came to donate.
