Special service honours seafarers
This year is the 160th anniversary of the Mission to Seafarers organisation as well as the 40th year since the local mission was established.
THE annual Sea Sunday celebratory service held at the Seafarers Chapel in Richards Bay over the weekend held a special meaning for those who participated.
This being the 160th anniversary of the Mission to Seafarers organisation as well as the 40th year since the local mission was established, the cumulative ministering done by both the international and the homegrown bodies was cause indeed for praise and honour.
Essentially, the service gives thanks for those who carry out the mission activities and, more especially, prays for those seafarers who brave the oceans to boost the maritime economy.
The stress and loneliness of sailors separated from their homes and families for large parts of each year, were a special focus.
Besides a number of clergymen, the service was also attended by the NSRI, Sea Scouts and sailors from vessels in port on the day.
