WATCH: Emergency signage plan implemented

The project was driven in the wake of numerous drownings in flat water at the greater Bay Hall area over the years, owing to the sudden steep drop in the ocean bed.

MOTIVATED by the need for rapid response to drown scenes, a local company has sponsored signage that will ensure rescuers are directed to the exact area of the incident.

The project was driven in the wake of numerous drownings in flat water at the greater Bay Hall area over the years, owing to the sudden steep drop in the ocean bed.

Alfred H Knight Ukwanda (Pty) Ltd has funded bilingual (isiZulu and English) emergency location signs in this section as well other recreational sectors, including the T-Jetty, Pelican Island and Green Africa canal areas.

‘Each sign has a unique location number printed on it which is cross referenced to a GPS position,’ said NSRI spokesperson Brynn Gericke.

‘These GPS locations will be given to all the emergency personnel so that they can respond to the correct location as soon as possible.

‘Sea Rescue and police divers often race to the wrong place and we only have a short window of opportunity in which to attempt to resuscitate a patient, so it’s important we have an exact location.

‘The City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue Services has kindly agreed to receive these emergency calls.’
