Good news on the cards for licence payments

Regular complaints are received from the public regarding the absence of card facilities, which exposes them to criminal attacks while being forced to carry large amounts of cash.

AT last! The City of uMhlathuze vehicle licensing offices in Richards Bay and Empangeni will soon be able to accept card payments.

An item at Tuesday’s Exco meeting reported the impending installation of credit card machines by the Department of Transport.

Presently, the only method of payment available to clients is by cash or cheque, for services ranging from vehicle registration, licensing and settling of traffic fines.

Regular complaints are received from the public regarding the absence of card facilities, which exposes them to criminal attacks while being forced to carry large amounts of cash.

Transactions are also extremely time consuming as cashiers are required to count the money.

Meanwhile, a separate item dealt with ‘irregularities’ in cash collections at the licensing departments, discovered during an internal audit.

Officials have since issued a number of corrective measures to overcome flaws relating to the handling and handover of daily cash.

Financial transactions performed on the eNaTIS System between March 2014 and July 2015 are being investigated.

While it was reported a staff member has been suspended and is under investigation, no details were offered and no response was given to a question on how much cash is missing.
