Celebrating a century of wisdom and life

Even at 100 years, Gcinekile Mbuyazi is as stronger as an ox

WHEN you first meet gogo Gcinekile Mbuyazi (100), her love for life, education and accumulated wisdom is quite evident – she immediately fills the room with her positive energy.

The much-loved grandmother of Thinasobabili section in Ngwelezane celebrated her 100th birthday at eKwethabeni Lutheran Church on Saturday.

Surrounded by family, friends and church members, Mbuyazi celebrated the milestone of wisdom, good health and life.

While others half her age walked inside the church using their walking sticks, Mbuyazi entered with no assistance – greeting everyone with her bright smile.

After 100 years of life she is still young at heart and strong as an ox.

‘I don’t even have high blood pressure or any other diseases and don’t take any medication,’ she said.
She was born in June 1916 at Ongoye Mission where her father preached.

In the late 1930s she started working as a teacher and then principal at Imbabe Junior Primary School, and later moved to eNgwelezana Hospital where she worked until she retired.

She says being a pastor’s daughter taught her discipline, values and love for the church.

‘I was able to share my knowledge and church lessons with many generations after me. All I wanted was to educate and empower black children, and I am grateful to have had an opportunity to change their lives,’ she said.

In her 100 years, she witnessed many revolutions including the launch of the Coca-cola formula, the two Great World Wars and many South African changes.

Even though she never had children of her own, Mbuyazi says she has been blessed to be a mother to hundreds over the years.

To this day, many still seek her advice on various matters.
This community icon is also known for her love for farming and crocheting.

‘She managed to hand down that knowledge to many people in the community and family. We are blessed to have her and we wish her more years to come,’ said nephew Dan Kgaphola.

Mbuyazi’s younger sister will be turning 96 years next month, and God has surely blessed these siblings with life and strength.
