Back to basics for Pongola Municipality

The Back to Basics programme will be implemented across Zululand District.

HIGHLIGHTING the importance of living in a clean environment, Pongola Municipality recently held a Back to Basics event, in which various local and district municipal councillors participated in various municipal services.

The event commemorated the one-year anniversary of our provincial government’s Back to Basics programme overseen by COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs).

‘The idea is for us as the citizens to keep the environment clean, which is why we said, let us go to our community in town so they will see how important it is to have a clean environment,’ said Pongola municipal speaker Herbert Ngcamphalala.

‘We have made tremendous progress in delivering services such as electricity and refuse removal at a local level,’ said Pongola municipal spokesperson Meshack Mdlalose.

‘Yet, despite our delivery achievements, it is clear that much needs to be done to support, educate and, where needed, enforce implementation of local government’s mandate for delivery.’

The day-long campaign saw Ngcamphalala and communicators of the Zululand District Municipality, supported by municipal waste management, grass cutters and storm water drainage staff removing refuse, fixing storm water drains and patching potholes.

The programme will be held in all local municipalities in the Zululand District and communities are urged to work with local government to ensure the campaign is implemented effectively.
