Child protection education and awareness

The festival aimed to provide a safe place for children to play in uMkhanyakude District

IN a bid to promote children’s rights, revive the lost culture of good parenting and create a safe playing space for the children of uMkhanyakude, Star for Life held its inaugural Jabulani Children’s Festival to commemorate International Child Protection Week.

Held at the Mbazwana Arts Centre, the one-day festival also sought to lay a foundation for children to become responsible adults in the future.

The festival was geared towards children from Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, up to primary school age.

They enjoyed a children’s parade, face painting, educational productions and role-plays, games, short films, stories and a parenting workshop for their parents.

‘This is one of the most successful events Star for Life has held through partnerships with the community, local NGOs and numerous stakeholders,’ said Star for Life Programme Manager JD Kabati.
The organisation partnered with the Departments of Arts and Culture, Transport, Education, Social

Development, as well as Soul City, SAPS, uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality and other local NGOs.
Speaking at the event, Inkosi Ndabezinhle Zikhali expressed his disapproval of child abuse.

‘We pledge to do all in our power to make sure the rights of children are not abused’.

uMhlabuyalingana Deputy Mayor Malet Nxumalo spoke to the parents and said, ‘We, as parents, should do our very best in raising our children and ensuring they are protected from any kind of abuse.
‘Our children of today are our leaders of tomorrow.’
