Unemployed youths profit from workshop

The young people were taught skills in communication, appreciating diversity, conflict resolution, hygiene and cleanliness, personal health and world view.

FIVE days was all it took for a group of young, struggling Zululanders to get jobs at one of South Africa’s leading retail groups.
Local non-profit NRB Youth Development recently hosted their ‘Job-Preparedness Workshop’ in partnership with the Mr Price Foundation, Jumpstart and the National Youth Development Agency
(NYDA) to prepare youth members in Madlanzini for a bright future in retail at local Mr Price stores.
The young people were taught skills in communication, appreciating diversity, conflict resolution, hygiene and cleanliness, personal health and world view.
To participate, applicants had to be unemployed and between 18 and 35 years old.
‘We started off the course with assessments on each person and then did another round of assessments after they completed the programme to establish if they improved their outlook on life,
attitudes and their world view,’ said NRB Youth Development Chairman, Ndumiso Aubrey Mdluli.
‘It is crucial for the youth to have the right mindsets to thrive in a work environment.
‘Out of 52 entries, 14 applicants were successful and will now be given the opportunity to work at Mr Price stores in Richards Bay and Empangeni.
‘They were also awarded NYDA certificates.’
Mdluli said it was an invaluable experience to help youth members grow in such a short period of time.
‘We hope local companies will assist us to continue hosting these workshops and help empower more youngsters to secure jobs.’
