Community boosts school feeding scheme

The programme has dedicated and passionate donors and sponsors who always ensure the pupils have a hot meal or sandwiches

A SCHOOL feeding scheme which has been running for over 18 years continues to receive overwhelming business and community support.
Floraton Primary School‘s lunch programme is thriving thanks to groceries and fresh vegetables which are received on a regular basis from local businesses, religious organisations, community groups and individual donors.
While some charity and community organisations are feeling the pinch due to the decline in donations in the tough economic times, principal D Williams said their programme is blessed to have dedicated and passionate donors and sponsors who always ensure the pupils have a hot meal or sandwiches.
She said the school feeds between 250 to 300 children daily and they are reliant on donations to sustain the project.
‘We have a fully fitted kitchen and members who prepare hot meals at school, while some organisations deliver ready made meals or sandwiches on certain days.
‘Our scheme would not have been sustainable without our generous supporters such as the Brackenham Ministers Fraternal, Methodist Church, White Diamond Jewellers, Zululand Sisterhood, Bay Fruit and Veg, Divine Life Society, Umhlathuze Hindu Development Committee and all our individual donors who contribute in their personal capacities.
‘We have also been privileged to receive donations of taps from Aqua Tap, paint from Plascon and school uniforms from Kwa-Jabulani,’ said Williams.
