Veggie garden to boost orphanage sustainability

Bonisanani Community Organisation relies on the support of local businesses, community organisations and individuals to help take care of her 17 children

IDENTIFYING several needs at an orphanage in a rural part of Nseleni, the women’s ministry at Richards Bay Open Door Assembly visited Bonisanani Community Organisation on Saturday to deliver a donation of gardening tools and seedlings.
The owner of the orphanage, Mama Shabalala relies on the support of local businesses, community organisations and individuals to help take care of her 17 children aged from two to 25.
Championing the famous Chinese proverb, ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,’ the women’s first task was to establish the vegetable garden to provide a food source for the orphanage.
Handing over the donation on Saturday, member Melinda Forbay said the youngsters from the home have been hard at work for several weeks preparing the soil for their veggie patches.
‘Our ladies clubbed together to purchase the seedlings and we believe the orphanage will be able to save money and be self sufficient by planting their own produce.’
The orphanage is in dire need of donations for repairs and maintenance on their buildings, and anyone who can assist can contact Melinda on 082 9574839.
